Secondary circulations in Holmboe waves
نویسنده
چکیده
A sequence of direct simulations is used to study mechanisms for the growth of secondary circulations and turbulence in stratified shear flows. Five cases are examined, of which four deliver Holmboe waves as the primary instability and the fifth generates Kelvin-Helmholtz billows. Secondary circulations range in strength from weak, laminar motions to turbulence that destroys the parent wave. Processes that drive disturbance growth include shear production via the Orr mechanism, sheared convection in overturned regions, and sloping convection in stably stratified wave crests. Results are compared with previous predictions based on normal mode stability analysis. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2210504

Mixing in Symmetric Holmboe Waves
Direct simulations are used to study turbulence and mixing in Holmboe waves. Previous results showing that mixing in Holmboe waves is comparable to that found in the better-known Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) billows are extended to cover a range of stratification levels. Mixing efficiency is discussed in detail, as are effective diffusivities of buoyancy and momentum. Entrainment rates are compared wi...
متن کاملThe Structure and Maintenance of Stationary Waves in the Winter Northern Hemisphere
Previous studies of extratropical stationary waves in the winter Northern Hemisphere (NH) often focused on effects of orography and land–ocean thermal contrast on the formation, structure, and maintenance of these waves. In contrast, research attention to tropical stationary waves was attracted by the summer monsoon circulations and the ENSO-related climate variability. Consequently, the struct...
متن کاملModulation of subtropical stratospheric gravity waves by equatorial rainfall
Internal gravity waves influence a variety of phenomena in Earth’s stratosphere and upper troposphere, including aviation weather turbulence and circulations that set high-altitude distributions of ozone and greenhouse gases. Here coupling between the dominant mode of subseasonal variability of the equatorial atmosphere—the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO)—and subtropical stratospheric gravity w...
متن کاملEvolution and mixing of asymmetric Holmboe instabilities
When a stably stratified density interface is embedded in a region of strong velocity shear, hydrodynamic instabilities result. Here we generalize the stratified shear layer to allow an offset between the centre of the shear layer and the density interface. By including this asymmetry, and keeping the density interface thin with respect to the shear layer, the asymmetric Holmboe (AH) instabilit...
